Dumpster Diving
January 23, 2011Today I’m headed to the Tinmouth transfer station to do some dumpster diving. I’m on the hunt for plastic bottles, lots of plastic bottles.
We need refrigeration up on the hill for our produce this summer, but we do not have energy to spare. We also want to cut down on the energy our food system uses. Around 11% of food production energy goes into refrigeration of product. To curb our energy use we have been on the hunt for alternative cooling systems.
We decided to build an ice house but we were not to keen on the idea of cutting ice from the pond and hauling them into it. I was going to build frames and build my own blocks of ice to put in the cooler, but then I came across a story on vpr. It was about a couple in essex, vt who were building a modern day ice house. They were putting a 10% salt solution into plastic bottles and freezing them in place by opening a hatch in the roof of the building. You can find the audio clip here I thought it was a great idea and we are planning on using it.
I’m off wish me dumpster diving luck.
