Breezy Meadows Orchards & Nursery

We started Breezy Meadows Orchard and Nursery in the fall of 2010. We farm on a beautiful south facing piece of land nestled in the hills of Tinmouth Vermont. The goal of our farm is to produce a diverse assortment of food using agricultural systems that are closer inline with natural systems then conventional farming and that can sustain us in the times ahead.

We are currently growing 1/4 acre of mixed vegetables, we have two milking goats, one sow, 25 laying hens, an acre of rice paddies, and a growing orchard of mixed fruit trees, nut trees and many varieties of berry bushes.

In the spring, summer and fall our animals are rotated in an intensive managment system. We use poultry netting for our goats and chickens with solar chargers. The pigs have two strands of electric fence and fiberglass posts. They stay in for the most part as long as we move them frequently enough. We move everybody at least once a week if not once every 3-5 days.
We have roughly 3 acres of newly opened farm land that we are in the process of turning into silvopasture for the future. We are focusing our farming efforts on trying to return to a more traditional way of farming that focuses on the health of the land, the animals, plants, the fungi, the microbes, and the people involved. We hope that we will be able to refine our farming methods so that they can be an example of how all these non-conventional ideas do work on a commercial scale.

What is permaculture? Permaculture has many definitions, its name comes from the words permanent, agriculture, and culture, and its basic meaning is working with nature rather than against it. The practice is to create human systems that are based around natural ecosystems.

What is a silvopasture? Silvopasturing, is the practice of integrating trees, forage and livestock.
